AS Eesti Keskkonnateenused is a company providing various waste management and municipal services, offering its services in the larger centers/municipalities of Estonia. In some areas, services are provided through affiliated or subsidiary companies. The main areas of activity are the collection and transportation of household and construction waste, sorting of recyclable waste, preparation for recycling and sale. During the financial year, the unit dealing with street cleaning was separated into a separate company - EKT Teed OÜ. As of 31.12.2021, the company has 4 subsidiaries (Radix Hoolduse OÜ (100%), EKT Teed OÜ (100%), Esito OÜ (100%) and EKT Ecobio OÜ (100%)) and 3 affiliated companies (Prügimees OÜ (40.28%), Eesti Pakendiringlus OÜ (25%) and Tallinna Kommunaalteenused Haldus OÜ (49%)).

2022 was one of the most challenging years in the company's history, although the company managed to increase turnover in waste management-related areas, profitability fell significantly due to rapid and unexpected input price increases. The company's growth came from organic development and successful participation in public procurements.

In the household waste sector, turnover growth was achieved thanks to an increase in market share in the Tartu city waste collection market. The company is investing heavily in renewing its waste truck fleet, the renewal of the vehicle fleet started in 2018 continued in 2022 as well. Thanks to these investments, the average age of the truck fleet decreased significantly, and the efficiency of customer service improved significantly.

In the coming years, growth in this sector is expected to continue due to the expansion of the obligation to collect biodegradable waste separately also to smaller households from the beginning of 2024.

The result in the field of waste paper and other recyclable materials largely depends on the fluctuations in the market prices of recyclable materials. The price increase that began in the second half of 2020 reached its peak by the summer of 2022, followed by a sharp price drop in the fall, which was a significant reason for the company's decline in profitability. At the beginning of 2023, the price drop stopped and there are first signs of improvement in the situation.

In the field of construction waste management, unequal competition in the treatment market continues to be a hindrance to development. The war that began at the beginning of the financial year also had a negative impact on the development of this segment, but in the end it turned out to be relatively modest and overall the situation can be considered stable.

Similar to 2021, the weather conditions in 2022 were very difficult and negatively affected the profitability of the street maintenance sector, especially in the first quarter, i.e. before the street maintenance sector was separated into a separate company, which took place during April.

Despite the difficult situation, the company continued to invest in modern technology parks and treatment solutions. The amount of investments reached 3.6 million euros, investments of the same magnitude are planned for the current financial year.
