Retail environment and competitive situation

2022 was a year of recovery for all segments of retail from the negative effects of 2020.

According to Statistics Estonia, the sales of Estonian retail companies in 2022 (excluding motor vehicles) were 10.5 billion euros, growing by 18.4% in current prices compared to 2021. Prices increased significantly in 2022, growing by 19.4%. The price increase peaked in August at 24.8%, after which the growth slowed down except for food, where the price increase accelerated at the end of the year and reached 29.8% in December. Housing-related price increases accounted for 40% of the total price increase, food and non-alcoholic beverages 25%. Food prices increased by 19.9% in 2022. The volume of food sales turned into a decline due to rapid price growth.

The growth in turnover of the supermarket segment, reflecting the results of the specialized stores (predominantly food, tobacco products and alcohol) market segment in 2022, was 12.3%. The five largest retail chains in the specialized stores market segment are Coop, Selver, Maxima, Rimi and Prisma. In March, LIDL entered the supermarket segment with 8 stores, and by the end of the year, LIDL operated with 10 stores in Tallinn, Tartu

Narva and Jõhvi.

Financial results

Selver AS's sales revenue for 2022 was 601.9 million euros, growing by 4.7% compared to the previous year. In 2022, 43.7 million purchases were made from Selver stores, which exceeded the number of purchases in the previous year by 2.2%.

The growth in Selver AS's sales revenue in 2022 was slower than the market segment average. Selver's result is affected by the higher comparison base in the e-commerce segment in 2021.

Selver AS's pre-tax net profit for 2022 was 11.2 million euros, decreasing by 7.7 million euros compared to the previous year.

The rapid increase in energy carriers has had a significant impact on profit formation. Expenditures on electricity and heating increased by 7.5 million euros in 2022. Rapid price growth has put pressure on wage costs, which increased by 5.8% last year. Streamlining work processes has allowed for a reduction in the number of employees and a tenth increase in sales staff salaries.
