      Maastikuliselt jaguneb Viimsi poolsaar kaheks: klindi ees laiuvaks rannikumadalikuks ja
      aluspõhjaliseks kõrgendikuks Lubja–Pärnamäe ümbruses. Arheoloogiliselt on uuritud eelkõige poolsaare keskosa, mis hõlmab ka Pärnamäe külaala. See 8000 aasta vanune saarlava, mille suurim kõrgus merepinnast on 51,4 meetrit, on ulatunud üle veepinna juba Joldiamere staadiumis(umbes 9600–9000 eKr). Viimsi saarlava ühendab Põhja-Eesti lavamaaga Irust algav 4,5 km pikkune luitelise tekkega kitsas künnis, mis ulatub üle Mäe-Käära, Äigrumäe ja Kasti kuni Pärnamäe maasääreni. Väheviljaka pinnase tõttu on Viimsi poolsaar kaetud valdavalt männi- ja kuusemetsadega, kuid klindi rusukaldal ja Pärnamäe ümbruses esineb liigirikast lehtmetsa.
