's activity report 2022
The 2022/2023 season and fiscal year for the Estonian Ski Association (ESL) was active and eventful, and certainly successful. In the summer of 2022, changes took place in the ESL staff, when a new executive director took office in July, whose task was set by the board to ensure the operational and financial success of the organization, and in September, an office manager joined the team to support the administrative side. At the regular general meeting in the autumn, changes also took place in the board of the Estonian Ski Association, after which the board continued with 9 members. From the larger projects, the podcast "Ski Stories" continued in cooperation with Delfi Media and ski wax manufacturer Swix from November, during which 20 interesting and educational conversations were recorded with important people and athletes involved in skiing. In January, our member club coaches gathered again to offer the Estonian people
Free ski instruction for the Movement Year 2023 within the framework of the "100 Ski Hours" project. The project was implemented in cooperation with Estonian Health Trails and
The Center of Excellence for Physical Activity, and more than 1250 people participated in more than 130 hours across Estonia. In addition, the Ski Association's charity competition "Doers' Race" took place for the first time last year, in which two-member teams competed in a fun race in team sprint. The aim of the charity competition was to raise support for our junior teams so that they too could strive for their dreams.
Summing up the season, two major sports events organized by the Estonian Ski Association cannot be overlooked, when the entire Nordic Combined world elite came to Otepää for the traditional World Cup stage on the first weekend of January. Our own Kristjan Ilves also competed in the stage held in front of the home audience, who after his difficult start to the season got wind in his wings just in Otepää and continued the season with brilliant results. The second historic major competition took place in March, when after more than four years, the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup stage returned to Estonia and for the first time to Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. It was a true sports festival that received a lot of media attention both locally and internationally, made historic by both the competition venue and the first use of floor-free waxing in the World Cup series.
The Ski Association athletes performed very honorably in front of the home audience and provided nerve-wracking for all those present.
Last year was also a year of title competitions, when World Championships were held in all our managed areas (cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, alpine skiing, snowboarding and freestyle skiing) in February. We were represented in almost all of the aforementioned areas except freestyle skiing and snowboarding, where unfortunately our athletes did not start due to various circumstances. The title competition period was opened by alpine skiers Juhan Luik and Tormis Laine, who achieved their best career places at the World Championships held in Courchevel-Meribel. Juhan Luik came 18th in the alpine combined and Tormis Laine achieved 31st place in the giant slalom. The Alpine Skiing World Championships were followed by the Nordic World Championships in Planica, where our cross-country skier, Nordic combined and ski jumpers were in competition. The best result was provided by the Nordic combined
Kristjan Ilves, who achieved sixth place in the small hill competition and caused a real nerve-wracking in all Estonian ski sports fans until the last meters of the ski track in the large hill competition and achieved a great fourth place. Cross-country skiers had already made a very good start to the season collectively before going to the title competitions, when already on the first World Cup weekend in Ruka, Martin
Himma drove himself to the twenties for three days in a row and other athletes brought home great results. The best individual result of the title competitions was provided by Marko Kilp, who achieved 25th place and the team brought home both 12th place in team sprint and 4x10km relay.
The best individual result for women was provided by Kaidy Kaasiku achieving 29th place and together with her sister Keidy Kaasiku, they fought out 11th place in team sprint. The best place among ski jumpers was achieved by our most successful ski jumper in recent years, Artti Aigro, who achieved 25th place in the large hill jumping competition. Overall, it can be said that the development of our athletes has been as expected and stable over the past year and we are looking forward to the next Olympic Games with hope.
In other areas, the Estonian Ski Association continued its statutory activities by organizing Estonian Championships in all our sports, supporting the preparation and participation of our athletes in international competitions, organizing training and participating in international skiing life. Our ongoing priority is to popularize and develop skiing across Estonia and plans to continue the projects launched. There were also youth series in all our areas, in which more than 1300 young athletes participated across the areas and we are pleased that the number of participants is on the rise.
