's activity report 2022
AS Õhtuleht Kirjastus is a media company, focusing on web portals and periodical publishing.
Õhtuleht Kirjastus's portfolio includes Estonia's largest circulation daily newspaper Õhtuleht, a web portal with 540 thousand monthly users (12.2022, Gemius, real users) ranking third, including the largest recipe website toidutare.ee and several magazines appreciated by readers in print and online, such as Naisteleht, Tiiu, Kodukiri, Nipiraamat, Käsitoo, Kalale! Looduses, Teleleht, Eesti Ajalugu,
Eesti Mets and a portfolio of crossword magazines consisting of ten publications. Õhtuleht also owns a third of the book publishing company OÜ Hea Lugu.
Õhtuleht Kirjastus's values are freedom (we are free to express our thoughts and opinions), honesty (we speak about things as they really are), humanity (we stand for those whose voice is otherwise not heard) and modernity (we bring relevant information to the reader quickly and conveniently).
Seasonality of business
Õhtuleht Kirjastus's advertising revenue depends on significant seasonal fluctuations. Sales revenue is highest in the second and fourth quarters (pre-Christmas period) and lowest in the third quarter (lower consumption activity in summer and therefore lower advertising sales).
Subscription and retail sales revenue of journalistic publications is not as seasonal as advertising revenue. The quieter period also falls in the summer months and sales become more active again in the fall.
Cyclicality of business and general development of the operating environment
Õhtuleht Kirjastus's field of activity is affected by the cyclical nature and fluctuations of the country's economy.
The company's revenues move in correlation with general economic development indicators. If the economy develops faster, the company's revenues also increase faster and vice versa. Changes in consumer consumption habits also affect revenues.
In 2022, THI in Estonia increased by 19.4% compared to the previous year. For Õhtuleht Kirjastus, this was mainly reflected in increased input prices, especially in the print segment and home delivery costs.
Successful year despite sharply increased cost base In 2022, the company's revenues grew by 2%, reaching 14.2 million euros, EBITDA was 1.2 million euros and net profit 0.4 million euros. EBITDA decreased by 9% in annual comparison, which is due to a sharply increased cost base and investments in marketing activities for the portal Kliendilehed.ee.
We opened a new portal Kliendilehed.ee in March. Our goal is to provide people with a convenient opportunity to find attractive discount offers from one place in an environment of rapidly rising prices. We see that various manufacturers and merchants also benefit from this portal, as rising print and delivery costs motivate to reduce the production of printed customer leaflets - we concluded several advertising collaborations during the year. In March, we started displaying offers from larger grocery stores and in October we added offers from larger construction stores. The portal's visitor record was 74 thousand visitors in one month.
The noticeably increased cost base in the print segment and the cessation of Monday retail sales initiated by Lehepunkt from August led to the need for several major changes affecting the print segment in the second half of the year. In the fall, we started negotiations with OÜ
United Magazines for the sale of the magazines Kodukiri, Nipiraamat and Käsitöö. We see that the perspective of print journalism looking into the future is rather in a declining trend and we considered it reasonable to reduce our product portfolio's dependence on paper products and use the freed resources and capital from sales primarily for growing and developing the digital direction.
The negotiations were successful and so the mentioned magazines were sold by the end of the year. We also started preparations at the end of the year so that we could stop publishing Õhtuleht on Mondays from January. The latter was an important change for us, as it allowed us to 2023.
