1921. aastal käivitati Kohtla-Järvel prooviõlivabrik, kus õli saamise eesmärgil katsetati põlevkivi utmist spetsiaalses retordis ehk teisisõnu põlevkivi kuumutamist ilma õhu juurdepääsuta. Üle ootuste heade tulemuste toel ehitati aastatel 1924-1942 neli õlivabrikut.

1945. aastal alustati tollase NSVL Riikliku Kaitsekomitee otsuse kohaselt uue põlevkivitöötlemise kompleksi rajamist Kohtla-Järvele loosungi all “Gaasi Leningradile”.

1948. aastast saigi alguse põlevkivist tehtud majapidamisgaasi pumpamine Leningradi. Hiljem suunati gaasijuhe ka Tallinna ja teistesse Põhja-Eesti linnadesse.

1947. aastal põlevkivitöötlemise kompleksi struktuuris asutati automaatika tsehh ning 1992. aastal moodustati selle baasil tütarettevõte KJ Automaatika OÜ.

Viru RMT on Viru Keemia Grupp AS-i (VKG) tütarettevõte, mis alustas tegevust 1. septembril 2001. aastal. Ettevõte on loodud Viru Õlitööstus AS (alates 20.07.2005. a. VKG Oil AS) remondi- ja mehaanikatsehhi baasil, millest tulenevalt on ettevõttel pikaajaline kogemus keemia- ja energiatööstuse ettevõtete teenindamise alal.

2003. aastal ühendati Viru RMT-ga VKG AS-i tütarettevõte KJ Automaatika OÜ ja moodustati uus tootmisüksus veevarustuse- ja kanalisatsioonivõrkude hooldamiseks. Töötajate arv ühendamise hetkel moodustas 171, käibe moodustas 2.207 mln €.

2005. aastal oli rajatud ja välja arendatud Tootmisosakond. Perioodil 2006 – 2007 a. moodustati ettevõttes kaasaaegsed ettevalmistus- ja koostejaoskonnad, värvimis-, keevitus- ja montaažiosakonnad.

2007. aastal moodustati Viru RMT struktuuris Ehitusosakond.

2008. aastal moodustati projekteerimise grupp.

Viru RMT-l on sertifikaat ISO 9001 alates 2006 aastast. 2007 aastal sai ettevõte rahvusvahelise sertifikaadi, mis kinnitab töötervishoiu vastavust OHSAS 18001 standardi nõuetele.

In 1921, a pilot oil shale processing plant was launched in Kohtla-Järve, where shale oil production was tested using retorting, i.e., heating oil shale in the absence of air.
