Significant impacts on the economic environment In early 2022, the Covid-19 crisis was compounded by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The impact of pandemic-related restrictions on retail businesses was significantly smaller in 2022 than in 2021. Due to the war in Ukraine and related sanctions, retailers removed Russian and Belarusian goods from sale and had to quickly update supply chains.
In 2022, the Estonian economy was most affected by high inflation, according to Statistics Estonia, the consumer price index rose by 19.4% in 2022 compared to the 2021 average. The biggest influencer of the consumer price index in 2022 were changes in housing prices, which together accounted for two-fifths of the total increase. Food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for nearly a quarter of the total increase. According to the forecasts of the Bank of Estonia, price growth should slow down in 2023 and reach a more usual level in the second half of the year.
According to preliminary data from Statistics Estonia, the total sales revenue of retail businesses in 2022 was 10.5 billion euros. Compared to 2021, sales revenue increased by 2% at constant prices. Sales revenue increased by 3% in industrial goods stores and decreased by 3% in food stores.
As the war in Ukraine continues, there is great uncertainty about the outlook and forecasts for the economy.
At the time of preparing the report, the management still assesses the business as stable and is ready to reorganize its activities according to the situation.
